WINTER 2007
There are no water resource concerns in the South East of England as we head into winter – the time of year when our underground aquifers have the chance to be replenished.
High rainfall over spring and summer, coupled with a wet 2006/07 winter means that no water supply concerns are anticipated. Indeed May to July was the wettest three months on record for many areas and river, reservoir and groundwater levels are close to or above average.
The wet summer meant that demand for water was low, however water efficiency continues to be a key message of all the water companies in the South East.
Currently there are 20 large-scale water company programmes and pilots recently or almost complete. This has led to Waterwise commenting that there is probably more water efficiency activity underway in the UK that in any other country!
The type of severe weather we have seen in recent years is expected to become more common and intense with climate change, so water companies are now working hard to factor the impacts of climate change into their business planning.
As always we are asking our customers to continue to use water wisely to ensure that there is a healthy supply of water for us all.
