Using water wisely

While drought is far from people's minds now, it is important that we continue to use water wisely, even when there are no water shortages.

We don't know when the next drought will be but, when it does occur, we will all know what to do so we don’t waste this finite resource.

  • Turn off the tap when brushing teeth

  • Don’t clean or peel vegetables under a running tap – use a bowl instead

  • Only boil as much water as you need in a kettle or saucepan

  • Only use a washing machine or dishwasher when you have a full load

  • Use a mulch on the garden to keep water in and use water retaining products in pots and hanging baskets

  • Plan your garden with water efficiency in mind

  • Wash your car with a bucket or sponge

  • Choose water efficient appliances and fixtures (e.g. taps) when you are replacing your old ones

  • Put a water displacement device in old toilet cisterns

  • Consider adding water recycling if you are planning any building work

  • Lag pipes to prevent leaks

  • Don’t water established trees, shrubs or lawns – they just don’t need it

  • When watering plants, water directly around the roots

  • Collect rainwater for watering the garden

  • Fix drips and leaks – especially for taps

  • Only water new lawns for four weeks – established lawns don’t need watering

  • Put in a water meter and only pay for the water you use

  • Take showers instead of baths – and keep showers to five minutes
